Grants are not a loan or "free money". Grants are amounts of money given to organizations or individuals for specific purposes. You can obtain grants from businesses, foundations and the government. You can obtain large sums of money for your projects or research if you tap the right resources. Think about your project's goals and mission, and then research groups that share similar interests.
Grants come large and small. It's easy to think that a giant organization such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation might support only large projects. In 2009, it funded a grant for $9,950,000 to the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in India. However, the same month it also awarded a grant of $306 to a small organization called Bike Works Seattle "for general operating support". No matter what your needs are, there's most likely a grant you can apply for.
You can also look for grants from your state government - start with the state's official government website. Some states even offer specialty websites that provide keyword or category searches, such as the TexasOnline eGrants Search site.
Then there are the big dogs - federal grants. The United States government has a plethora of grants to choose from. Go to the grants.gov Web site to search by category, agency or keyword. Remember to read the fine print when applying for any grant to ensure you can fully comply with the agreement. Once you get started, you'll see it's easy to raise the money you need to fulfill your dreams.

Free Applications for Cash Grants

Foundations typically have a preference for which causes they will 'grant money' to. You will need to determine which Foundation caters to your specific cause by examining the Annual Register of Grant Support Directory at your local library.

When requesting funds less than $10,000, you will need to write a letter of proposal to the issuing Foundation. Foundations prefer to deal with organizations, unlike Philanthropists and CEO's, who prefer individuals. If you create your own non-profit organization, then you would appeal to Foundations. Information on how to start a non-profit organization can be obtained at:

Your proposal letter should be written on your letterhead and signed by the head officer of your organization. Include:

-- A brief overview of the organization.

-- The reason(s) this grant is needed.

-- The plan in which these needs will be met.

-- Show the budget for your plan.

-- Tell how your plan will be supported after the grant expires.

-- Show evidence of your tax-exempt status.

-- Provide an audited financial statement from your organization.

List a specific program and not a list of different needs.

-- Be brief and to the point. The letter is intended to outline your plan. Inclued:

-- Your Plan.

-- State your specific needs.

-- Describe the organization.

-- Describe the financial potential(s) of your plan.

-- Your supporters.

-- The total cost of your plan.

-- Describe how your needs will be met.

Obama's Grants and Scholarships

President Barack Obama has been a big booster of education. His 2010 budget proposal included a boost to Pell Grants from $4,050 to $5,350 for instance. Other Obama Grants and Scholarships include the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (worth up to $4000 each year), the Federal Perkins Loan, and the Stafford Student Loan.

Everyone knows that college has become terribly expensive. Costs have exceeded the standard inflation rate for many years now. At a time when a college degree is vital for getting a job, the cost of tuition has pushed it out of the realm of many students.

Obama has asked every adult in the United States to get one more year of education than they otherwise would to keep this country economically strong. He hopes that by 2020, we will have the largest percentage of college graduates of any country in the world.

Insuring Your Non-Profit Organization

Introduction

Your mission is clear and important. Volunteers are ready to help and donors are lined up to contribute. The next step is execution, including insurance for your non-profit organization.

Non-profit organizations serve a very wide range and will have very different insurance requirements. However, they also share common challenges. Often, non-profit organization will evolve causing new insurance issues to emerge.

Liability for Good Works

The city has offered an in-kind donation of office space. An event venue has a room for your fund raiser. Your new clinic lease is ready for signature. In the "fine print" of each of these opportunities is an insurance requirement for public liability. The written insurance requirement typically will call for a quantity of liability plus naming the landlord / event venue as an additional insured. Also, typically in the "fine print" is an Indemnity or Hold Harmless clause that triggers an additional insured requirement called a "Waiver of Subrogation." Meeting these commercial insurance requirements is part of the price of achieving your good work.

Don't Take Insurance for Granted

Your grant proposal has been approved! Part of the grant requirements often will be commercial insurance requirements. You won't get the funding your group needs without handling the grant agreement's specifications. Besides public liability, grants that include hiring people often require worker's compensation insurance. This is insurance protection for the employer (your organization) for lawsuits from injuries that occur to workers during the course of their employment. It also helps an injured employee with medical costs, rehabilitation and lost wages while recovering from a work related injury.

Insuring an Effective Board

An active and involved Board of Directors is a critical component for most non-profit organizations. Your volunteer board members will be called on to make the tough decisions and are responsible for oversight of your activities, particularly employment decisions. They are also primary community connectors and fundraisers for your group. Directors and Officers Insurance is critical to protect them from lawsuits that can erupt which can entangle them personally.

Equip Your Group

As your non-profit organization grows, insuring your group's equipment and office contents can become a critical risk. A fire, burglary or other loss can destroy these assets and undermine your ability to do your good work. Property insurance can be "packaged" with your General Liability to add insurance protection for these assets.

Driven Volunteers

Many non-profits depend on volunteers to drive their own autos. Non-owned auto coverage is an important safeguard to your organization. It provides liability coverage if the group is targeted after an accident when a volunteer is driving their own personal auto for the group.

Retaining Key Staff

Attracting and retaining skilled staff comes with the need for a group benefit plan particularly group health insurance. Small group benefit plans can be obtained once your group has at least two full-time employees. As the employer, your group will be required to pay at least 50% of the employee health insurance benefit cost.

Going Back to College - Scholarships for Working Moms

If you're a working mom with limited financial resources you may think that getting a college degree is next to impossible. You couldn't be more wrong. Aside from the government scholarships mentioned above, there are other programs that offer financial aid to working moms:

• Microsoft Scholarship Program offers educational grants for women, minorities, and people with disabilities. To qualify, you must be currently enrolled in a 4-year degree program with a focus on computer science, information technology or similar fields.
• AT&T Labs Fellowship Program provides grants to minorities and women who have a background in IT or are interested in technology.
• The Sam Walton Community Scholarship is for people who live in communities near a Walmart or Sam's Club store. You can apply as long as you have a high school diploma or GED. For Walmart employees who qualify based on financial need, Walmart offers their Associate Scholarship.

There are many more scholarships for working moms available out there. All you have to do is search the internet and find the right scholarship for you. After applying, don't forget to check if your request has been accepted or not. It can take a few weeks or months to evaluate eligible candidates and distribute the grants.
